Homelessness in the Countryside: A Hidden Crisis (Newgate Suite)

A Talk by Dr Laura Burke (Lecturer in Anthropology and Associate Researcher, University of Kent)

About this Talk

The session will present the final report from the research ‘Homelessness in the Countryside: A Hidden Crisis' investigating how rural homelessness is an unseen crisis in the countryside, driven by limited access to services and an absence of affordable homes. Existing research has largely focused on urban homelessness due to its inherent visibility, yet it has neglected a growing crisis facing rural areas, and this lack of exposure has meant it hasn’t received the attention and investment it deserves from policymakers.

Dr Laura Burke will share some of the stories found through the research, the key themes that arose from the data and their recommendations to policymakers. Bex Sowerby, Outreach Worker at Turning Tides, will contribute her expertise and practical examples of what can be done.
